Nearly 2.5 million children and adolescents in America have learning disorders or other developmental disabilities that can create barriers to their education as well as achieving stable, rewarding careers in adulthood.
Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability in the United States, affecting one out of every 68 children (and one out of every 37 boys).
In our own community, there are hundreds of children who need specialized developmental healthcare. Today, these children and their families can receive the top-quality care they deserve right here – without the inconvenience and disruption of having to travel outside our region.
At Atlantic General Hospital our healthcare providers have partnered with the neurodevelopmental specialists at the renowned Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, MD, to deliver the most advanced diagnostics and treatment to children and adolescents in our region.
Our unique partnership between Atlantic General Hospital and Kennedy Krieger Institute, is dedicated to improving the lives of children with developmental disabilities.
Treating Autism, ADD/ADHD, Learning Disorders and Other Intellectual Disabilities
Atlantic General Hospital’s healthcare providers have partnered with the neurodevelopmental specialists at the renowned Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, MD, to deliver the most advanced diagnostics and treatment to children and adolescents in our region.
This is the first Kennedy Krieger Institute collaboration with another healthcare organization to provide neurodevelopment evaluations via telemedicine. - Communication, speech and language disorders
- Other learning disorders
- Intellectual disabilities
Telemedicine Collaboration – How it Works
Using advanced remote audio/video conferencing equipment, the Baltimore-based specialists at Kennedy Krieger’s Center for Development & Learning and Center for Autism & Related Disorders can perform comprehensive initial evaluations as well as follow-up care for patients who come to the Atlantic Health Center on Atlantic General Hospital’s campus in Berlin, MD.
Highly sensitive audio and video feeds allow neurodevelopmental pediatricians
to clearly see and hear the patient’s responses and evaluate the
manipulation of various testing items by the patient. Our own pediatric
nurses are present throughout the entire consultation to assist the Kennedy
Krieger specialist and the patient with these activities. The transmission
of audio and video date feeds is encrypted to ensure the privacy of patient
information and interaction.
