Why Give

Most of us don’t give much thought to hospitals or other health care services until we need them. Yet, at one time or another, we will seek health care for ourselves or someone we love. We all want and deserve the best care possible.

We are fortunate to have an excellent, not-for-profit hospital and health system of outpatient offices with superb medical staff, clinicians and support staff here in Worcester County, Maryland, and in Sussex County, Delaware.

But it takes significant financial resources to maintain this high level of care and continued access to the services our community needs most.

Hospitals across the country are facing financial challenges in the delivery of health care. At Atlantic General and Health System, it is no different.

As a not-for-profit organization, Atlantic General reinvests any income generated from billing for the care provided back into the organization in the form of additional providers and services.

However, when factoring in recruitment and retention of high quality primary care providers and specialists, providing costly vital services like cancer care and emergency medicine, and maintaining and upgrading facilities and equipment, the expense of healthcare delivery is often higher than the revenue generated from billing for care.

Atlantic General Hospital Foundation's Annual Appeal

As a not-for-profit, community-based hospital, Atlantic General Hospital and Health System holds itself accountable to the people we serve — you, your loved ones, and every person who lives in or visits our community.

In the past, donations to the Annual Appeal have helped to fund Atlantic General Hospital’s Gudelsky Family Medical Center, second floor Inpatient area renovation; expand breast health services by adding a second 3D mammography unit in the Eunice Q. Sorin Women’s Diagnostic Center; purchase major medical equipment such as Mako Robotic Arm-Assisted Joint Replacement System, MRI, Bone Density, Ultrasound, Telemedicine and Smart Beds; develop SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Exam) Program, Ambient Technology, and many other vital and important projects.

Looking ahead, dollars from this year’s Annual Appeal will be directed to:

  • Community Benefits: Throughout the year, we provide charity care, health professions education, and sponsor or participate in health fairs and other outreach events where health education and screenings are offered. Most of the screenings frequently performed are free of charge, including:
    • Total lipids and glucose testing
    • Blood pressure screenings
    • Prostate exams and PSA testing
    • Flu and COVID-19 vaccination clinics
    • Diabetes clinics
    • Provider recruitment and subsidies

  • John H. “Jack” Burbage, Jr. Regional Cancer Care Center: Renovations of this state-of the-art facility are needed to continue to provide the most advanced treatments for cancer patients. The clean room suite at the cancer center will be renovated to:
    • Ensure the room is maintained at the correct temperature, humidity, and pressure to provide a safe working environment for the staff involved in compounding activities.
    • Provide conditions that foster sterile compounding of the chemotherapy for the cancer center’s patients.

  • Body Plethysmography Chamber for Pulmonary Function Testing: The Body Plethysmography Chamber is a critical piece of equipment for pulmonary function testing to measure residual volume, total lung capacity, specific airway resistance and intrathoracic gas volume. The current unit has reached end of life. Without a body plethysmography chamber, physicians would be unable to evaluate a patient’s true lung volumes to properly diagnose and treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.

Atlantic General Hospital has been a pioneer in health care, bringing much-needed primary care and advanced specialty services to our community. Please join our donors in continuing to move health care in our community forward while also bolstering Atlantic General Hospital’s evolution as a leading provider of medical care.

Almost three decades ago, AGH dramatically changed the landscape of health and wellness for residents and visitors alike, and continues to strive to deliver the best medical care for all who need it. We deeply appreciate your past support and hope that you will consider making a gift to our hospital once more.
