INCREASING ACCESS TO CARE

Atlantic General Hospital and Health System continues to recruit both primary care providers and needed specialists as part of our mission-driven work to improve the health of the communities we serve. We have recently added two primary care physicians, a rheumatologist, an orthopedic surgeon and a second urologist to our health system, in addition to nine advanced practice providers who provide primary care and specialty health care services.

About Advance Practice Providers

Physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) are a great choice for primary care or specialty treatment. With the ongoing nationwide physician shortage, these advance practice providers fill an important role in helping people access the care they need. Like physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants can assess, diagnose and treat medical conditions and injuries. This includes giving physical exams, ordering and interpreting lab tests and x-rays, prescribing medication and making referrals for additional care.

The training program for nurse practitioners is based on the nursing model; an NP must be a registered nurse before completing their NP degree. PAs must complete a master's degree level program that is based upon the medical model.
