Atlantic General Hospital/Health System Now Accepting Applications for the James G. and Nancy W. Barrett Scholarship Program

Atlantic General Hospital is accepting applications for the James G. and Nancy W. Barrett Scholarship Program starting on April 10. The scholarship program gives nursing and radiology students coverage for books, tuition, and even health care benefits and flexible work schedules.

Once a student has completed their degree program and passed the state licensure exams, they will work full-time at Atlantic General Hospital/Health System for the equivalent of years they received a scholarship.

The program is named in honor of James G. and Nancy W. Barrett for the meaningful contributions the Barrett family has made to AGH. James G. Barrett passed away in 2004 while serving as chairman of the Atlantic General Hospital Board of Directors.

Created in 2000, the program was founded to address shortages of workers within the healthcare industry. In 2006, seven students in the Nursing Scholarship Program graduated. May 2007 will see the graduation of two more nurses. The Radiology program graduated one student in 2006 and is anticipating one radiologic technologist to graduate in May.

While in the program, scholarship students must work twelve hours per week at Atlantic General Hospital while still maintaining full-time status in their academic program.

The scholarship is available to local students enrolled in Wor-Wic Community College and Delaware and Technical Community College, as well as some other local schools. We also provide scholarships for nursing students at Salisbury University who are juniors and seniors pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing, as well as those in the Fast Track” Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

Students must have been accepted into a Radiology Program in either Wor-Wic Community College or Delaware Technical Community College to be eligible for our radiology-based scholarship.

The program is supported by many local businesses and organizations, including

  • Taylor Bank
  • The Ocean City Lions Club
  • The Lower Shore Workforce Alliance
  • The Retired Nurses of Ocean Pines
  • The Atlantic General Hospital Junior Auxiliary Group
  • The Atlantic General Hospital Medical Staff

“We’re making an investment in the future,” said Ocean City Lion Bill Jones. “Supporting this program only makes sense for our organization and our community. What goes around, comes around. Sooner or later, we will all need the hospital’s and these nurses’ services.”
