Big-City MRI Technology at Your Community Hospital

The Imaging Department at Atlantic General Hospital is pleased to offer the latest in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to the community we serve. Our two MRI scanners, one open and one closed, are newly-purchased, state-of-the-art machines manufactured by General Electric. Together, they give the AGH medical staff cutting-edge technology to aid in the diagnosis of their patients.

Our closed MRI unit has a  powerful magnet, able to produce images of great resolution, making it very sensitive in detecting disease. New or recent strokes can now be reliably detected by a new process called diffusion imaging. This scanner  also allows us to diagnose problems that otherwise would have required an invasive procedure, such as evaluation of a patient's bile ducts. In addition, this scanner can perform magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) tests to look for blockages in the arteries supplying the brain, kidneys and legs.

Best of all, because this MRI unit has a new short design of just four feet and has fast imaging time, patients will not feel as confined as they have in the past.

AGH also boasts the strongest open MRI scanner on the Eastern Shore. Its state-of-the-art design allows us to produce quality diagnostic images while greatly improving patient comfort. This machine, which is much quieter than older units and has no sides, allows scanning of claustrophobic or larger patients.

A board-certified radiologist is on-site at AGH during scanning hours to tailor the exam and, if desired, to discuss the results. In addition, a networking system allows us to send images to our radiologists after hours for emergency cases.

This unique combination of two powerful, cutting-edge MRI scanners allows the medical staff at Atlantic General Hospital to obtain the best quality images to diagnose their patients while providing greater patient comfort. While such technology is actually unavailable at many large urban hospitals, we can provide it in a patient-friendly environment in our beautiful community hospital.
