James G. and Nancy W. Barrett Scholarship Program
For nursing students

The scholarship recipients have already been determined for the 2012-2013 school year. The next opportunity to apply is April 1, 2013, for the 2013-2014 school year.

Atlantic General Hospital has developed the James G. and Nancy W. Barrett Scholarship Program to offer assistance with tuition, books and health care benefits to applicants who wish to pursue a career in nursing.

In 2004, the scholarship program was renamed to recognize the extraordinary efforts put forth by the late Jim Barrett and his wife Nancy in support of Atlantic General Hospital.

Description
Scholarship recipients will have their tuition and required books paid for by the hospital. The hospital also provides health care benefits for the student (and family, if necessary) at no charge. The program requires the candidate to work a minimum of 12.5 hours each week while maintaining full-time status in the educational program.

Upon successful completion of the nursing program and the licensing examination, the candidate will assume a position as a Registered Nurse at Atlantic General Hospital/Health System for twelve months for each school year in the scholarship program.  The Registered Nurse's schedule will be based on the needs of the hospital, which will include rotating days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Process
Candidate selection is based upon a completed employment application; answers to essay questions; two letters of recommendation from individuals who are knowledgeable of the applicant's character, motivation and work ethic; and an interview with committee members.

Selected candidates are provided with a flexible work schedule so as to best match his or her individual needs with those of the hospital.

Requirements
The candidate will be required to:

  • Obtain a Maryland Certified Nursing Assistant license within six months of accepting the nursing scholarship
  • Work at Atlantic General Hospital a minimum of 12.5 hours per week
  • Maintain full-time status in the nursing program
  • Repay all program costs in the event the candidate does not complete the program or fulfill the employment requirements
  • Upon successful completion of the nursing program and the licensing examination, the candidate will assume a position as a Registered Nurse at Atlantic General Hospital/Health System for twelve months for each school year in the scholarship program.  The Registered Nurse's schedule will be based on the needs of the hospital, which will include rotating days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
