Community Celebrates opening of James G. Barrett Medical Office Building

Friday, April 11 was a day of celebration for many at Atlantic General Hospital and within the Worcester County community, as local elected officials and chambers of commerce commemorated the grand opening of the new James G. Barrett Medical Office Building with a ribbon cutting ceremony and building dedication. Not even a power outage caused by a downed utility pole that lasted more than an hour dampened attendees’ spirits.

Recognition of the hospital’s 15th anniversary was held in conjunction with the event, with tours, free health screenings, face painting and a visit from Lollipop the Clown.

The 42,000-sq.-foot Barrett Medical Office Building, named in honor of the late James G. Barrett, was a dream for the former Worcester County Commissioner and member of the hospital board of directors. A proponent of the Atlantic General long before it was even built, Barrett had envisioned a central medical office complex on the hospital’s campus that offered convenience and comfort as well as specialized services.

Barrett was taken by cancer before the building was constructed, but his vision lived on. The new building brings to the community a new Wound Care Center, the Atlantic Endoscopy Center and the developing Women’s Health Center as well as the independent offices of Chesapeake Eye Center and Neurological Associates. Coastal Drug Center and Coffee Beanery also occupies space within the building.
