Atlantic General Expands Hospital Campus

After an initial ground-breaking in January and the start of vertical construction in mid-April, Atlantic General Hospital administration expects shell space for a new medical office building at the corner of Healthway Drive and Old Ocean City Boulevard to be complete in August 2006.

The 42,000 square-foot two-story building, which was designed by the Becker Morgan Group, is being built by Nason Construction of Salisbury; it is the first of two major construction projects that make up a master campus expansion plan for the hospital. The James G. Barrett Medical Office Building, named in honor of the former chairman of Atlantic General Hospital’s Board of Directors, will provide much-needed additional space for Atlantic General as well as specialists who practice at the hospital.

“The Barrett Medical Office Building’s purpose is to enhance the further growth of our medical community and provide capacity for Atlantic General Hospital to develop future service lines,” said Kim Justice, vice president of planning/operations. “This building will become the flagship for future development of our medical campus, which was Jim Barrett’s vision while serving as chairman.”

Negotiations are currently underway for purchase of the building’s eleven suites, and, according to hospital administration, the demand for space has exceeded their expectations.

Occupancy is scheduled for the spring of 2007.
